This week: It's that time of year again, and inventory is just around the corner for us. If you buy it, we don't have to count it! All yarns and knitting bags will be 30% off through December 31 (excluding yarns by Blue Moon Fiber Arts and Abstract Fiber). Selected yarns, bags, and books will be featured at 50% off. And don't forget that our dye kits continue at 60% off through the end of this month!

On the Needles: (00:31)

Jasmin has finished the body of the Boo Sweater. Gigi talks a bit about the lining technique, and highly recommends taking Jean Frost's lining class (if you can). She also recommends lining woolens with China silk, which can be bought at Thai Silks in Los Altos. (This is by The Cravery and Uncommon Threads, which we talk about.) Jasmin picked up the new book by Jared Flood, "Made in Brooklyn",  and absolutely loves it. Jasmin has cast on a pair of socks out of her "Hey Jude" handspun (dyed by Crown Mountain Farms). She compares them to the "She's like a rainbow" socks.

Gigi has put one row on her Ellina shawl. Gigi thinks she has hit Shawl Saturation. Jasmin 2010 is about finishing; Gigi 2010 is about streamlining. Jasmin hits the inventory reduction sale at Purlescence and picked up a bunch of different colors of the Filatura di Crosa Superior for cowls.

Gigi has decided to knit the Color Your Own sweater from Philosopher's Wool for her Ravelympics project. You can find Team Knitmore here, and Team Sasquatch here.

Mother Knows Best: (20:02)

Gigi talks about practice making better, and how sometimes repetition is the only way to master a technique.

Contest: (26:08)

We have extended the deadline on the Do Some Good contest to 1/9/2010. Prizes include Tess Yarns Microfiber Ribbon, and a yarn bowl. We'll announce the winner in Episode 83.

When Knitting Attacks! (27:08)

Gigi has made Sam a crazy long watch cap.

Holidays with the Knitmores: (30:40)

We have an epic taffy pull failure with the Knitmore nieces. We also discuss the giving of "virtual gifts", and favorite gifts we gave and received.

Straw into gold: (37:50)

Jasmin talks about weight versus yardage in spinning. Her guideline is to take the weight of equitable commercial yarn, and then add some if you're spinning for a sweater.

This week: Abstract FiberFact #2: Abstract Fiber yarns are dyed to minimize pooling and striping. While it’s impossible to prevent these effects entirely, we make every effort to create an overall textured effect and avoid pooling. This means Abstract Fiber yarns are suitable for showing off complicated patterns, like textures, lace, cables. The colors in the yarns are also perfect for colorwork using a more solid background color and just one of our handpainted colors to create a very dramatic design. Join our group on Ravelry, Aaabsolutely Abstract, for a list of shops who carry our yarns. Orders over $100 from our website ship for free in the US and Canada.

purl logo
This week: At Purlescence Yarns we are diehard cross-crafters. When we're not knitting, we're spinning, quilting, stitching, or weaving. We have been very pleased to include looms and weaving supplies amongst our offerings at the shop. This week we warped up our Schacht Wolf Pup 4 harness floor loom. It's a beauty! It's easy to operate and folds up for portability. It's all function in beautiful form. We're taking orders for the holidays now!

On the Needles: (00:30)

Gigi has finished her black Regia Saturn socks, and the crocheted edging. Jasmin has found better buttons for her Tangled Yoke Cardigan. Gigi has finished the front of her Origami Wrap Pullover. Jasmin talks about unearthing a 10-year-old UFO that has one seam left to do.

Gigi unearthed another marinating UFO, the Par Five socks (in Franklin's Panopticon). Jasmin is working on her Ariann, knit out of Dream in Color Classy (color: Butter Peeps). She is also finishing up her Tempting II, knit out of Tess Yarns Microfiber ribbon (bright orange). Jasmin shares her "button sweater" story. (The sweater was the Baby Albert, by Sally Melville.)

Jasmin is thinking about knitting "Boo" the Tweedy Pie Jacket (from Monkeysuits).

Events: (21:59)

9/19, 11 am - 3 pm: Spin in Public Day at Courthouse Square on Broadway in downtown Redwood City.

9/27, 11 AM: Shuttles, Spindles, and Flyers guild sale.

10/17-18: New York Sheep & Wool Festival (Rhinebeck). Meet'n'greet TBD.

Mother Knows Best: (24:11)

Gigi discusses buttonbands! Jasmin mentions the pink Pep sweater.

Contest: (30:10)

We're having a contest for contest ideas! Contest will be closed 9/30. (Also, if you haven't already, put yourself on our listener map!)

When Knitting Attacks: (32:29)

Jasmin's Ariann, when she pulled it out of storage, was knit the wrong size. Gigi's Swallowtail Shawl (errata here) was ripped and re-knit. Gigi doesn't recommend using quilting thread for lifelines, and finds the math for the shawl vexing. Jasmin's Drops Yoke Cardigan turns out wrong. Jasmin might run out of yarn for her Tempting II.

Straw into Gold: (42:07)

Jasmin finished spinning the "Hey Jude" from Crown Mountain Farms. (Jasmin recommends listening to this episode of "Stitch it!" to hear about worsted vs woolen plying.) Jasmin talks about a more holistic approach to spinning for projects.

We found a more commercially available 45 degree angle kate, by Louet.

Jasmin learns, the hard way, that recon work for holiday gifts is a challenge with Gigi. (We're both going to knit the Sunrise Circle Jacket out of handspun.)

This week: Abstract FiberFact #1: Who wants their knitting happiness interrupted by a knot in their yarn? We at Abstract Fiber believe our skeins should not have knots! We maintain a zero knot policy when winding our yarns. If the yarn breaks, we set it aside and start another skein. Our Macho Socks and triple skeins give you larger skeins, and still, no knots. At Abstract Fiber we provide you with the highest quality product, and that means no knots! Remember, at AbstractFiber.com we offer free shipping in the US and Canada for all orders over $100.

This week: Autumn is in the air. Here at Purlescence Yarns we're turning our thoughts toward holiday projects. We'll be knitting, spinning, and weaving most of our gifts this year. Now's the time to make that list of gifts for your friends and family. Let us help you with tons of ideas for great gifts. We'll be tweeting about them in the coming weeks. Follow us @Purlescence on Twitter!

Events: (00:31)

- New York Sheep and Wool Festival (Rhinebeck): Oct 17-18. Meetup TBD.

On the Needles: (2:41)

Jasmin's Tangled Yoke Cardigan is nearly finished. Gigi is working on her Origami Wrap Pullover. Jasmin talks about buttonbands, and picking up three stitches for every four rows when picking up stitches for a buttonband. Gigi is working on a few pairs of vanilla socks, out of Regia Galaxy. Jasmin is knitting a pair of socks for Andrew out of her Crown Mountain "Albatross" handspun.

Gigi is working on a crocheted edging for pillowcases. Jasmin talks about the yarn swap at Purlescence, where she came away with a skein of sock yarn, and a sweater's worth of Brown Sheep NatureSpun (in Cranberry Fog).

Contest: (25:44)

Post your contest ideas in our Ravelry group!

Mother Knows Best: (28:08)

We discuss "breakout projects". Jasmin's favorite "learning" baby sweater is the cardigan from Debbie Bliss's "Quick Baby Knits". We also recommend the Print of the Wave Stole (errata for the edging here), the Twist Cardigan, and the Lady Eleanor Stole.

When Knitting Attacks: (35:54)

Gigi has been foiled by not being able to find the issue of Interweave Knits with the Frost Flowers Stole (by Charlene Schurch). Jasmin's enthusiasm causes trouble, again, with her Tangled Yoke Cardigan. Gigi's Swallowtail Shawl hits some snags. We talk about lifelines. Gigi's Scandanavian Socks continue to be troubled.

Straw into Gold: (51:15)

Jasmin spins a little more of Duchess (to become the Carnaby Street Pullover). She has also been spinning some of the Crown Mountain Superwash in "Hey Jude". Jasmin experiments with dyeing pindrafted roving in the coil.

On the Needles: (6:39)

Gigi is working on a sock out of the Ceallach Dyes Superboo. We discuss the 52-pair plunge and Nakniswemodo. Jasmin has been hit by inspiration freight train, and has been PLOWING through her tangled yoke cardigan. Jasmin has also cast on a "Rick" sock from  Sock Innovations
out of the A Verb For Keeping Warm 70% Superwash Merino/30% silk in "Indigo Blue Sky". Jasmin has cast on 48 sts on size 2 needles.

Jasmin finds inspiration on the Ravelry Radar. She is in love with reanbean's "Drops yoke sweater". Gigi is in love with the Dayflower sweater from Knotions. Jasmin and Gigi want to knit the Sunrise Circle cardigan- both out of Jasmin's handspun. (Jasmin's is Crosspatch Creations "Rhiannon's Fire", Gigi's is out of the
Three Bags Full "Crimson Shadows". )

Our map got wiped! Would you be kind enough to re-add yourself?

Mother Knows Best: (24:02)

We talk about finding time to knit. Jasmin recommends always have knitting in your bag, in the event of needing Tech Support, a horrific traffic backup, or the random surprise spare time. Gigi wants a foot-driven mouse so she can surf Ravelry and knit simultaneously.

Gigi spreads the gospel of having routines. Jasmin talks about her "do it now" principle.

Contest! (37:14)

We're doing a contest, to find contests! Join in our Ravelry group thread and make your suggestions!

When Knitting Attacks: (38:37)

Gigi does battle with her sewing machine and angles. Jasmin makes an increasing error on her Tangled Yoke Cardigan.

Review: (43:26)

This week we review the Ceallach Dyes Superboo (65% Superwash Merino/ 35% Bamboo). We talk about our bias against bamboo. Jasmin compares it to the Pagewood Farms Yukon. We like the colors, we like the quality, we like the yardage. What we don't like is the bamboo. (If you like knitting with bamboo, you'll like this yarn.)

On the Needles: (00:29)

Thanks again to Andrew and Gregory for guest-hosting for us in Episode 65!

(Scroll down on the show notes to see the Daily Sock Summit Field Updates.) Gigi and Jasmin talk about their favorite points of Portland and the Sock Summit. When we went to scope out the convention center on Wednesday, we got to meet Judy Becker! Friday, we did five interviews, then had dinner with a bunch of knitting (and weaving!) notables.

Saturday's meet-and-greet was super fun! (You can find Jasmin's Flickr stream here.) Afterwards, they had dinner with Gail and Susan from Abstract Fiber, and Abby and Ben!

Jasmin spreads rumors about future Sock Summits. (All unsubstantiated information, please take it with a grain of salt.)

People we met:

Sherrill, from the Belle of the Ball podcast
Deb Accuardi, from the At the Kitchen Table podcast
Lise, from the Knitting Rose podcast
Heather, from CraftLit

Jasmin talks about the kindness of knitters. (Especially in the Sanguine Gryphon booth.) Jasmin mentions being surprised at how popular their Bugga sock yarn is.

We express our love for Charlene Schurch and Sivia Harding, both of whom Jasmin wanted to put in her pocket and bring home with her. We gush about the Luminary Panel.

There was some knitting. Gigi worked on a vanilla sock out of Meilenweit Jacquard. Jasmin finished the second Black and Tan sock for Andrew.

Mother Knows Best: (26:17)

We encourage you to introduce yourself to everyone at these types of events.

When Knitting Attacks: (31:34)

We discuss Great Moments in Knitmore Social Gaffe history.

Review: (35:42)

This week, we review the Watercolors II sock yarn (color, "Steph's 'crapshoot'") from the Periwinkle Sheep. We both liked the grippiness of the yarn, the colors, and the nice hand the yarn has.

On the Needles: (10:10)

Gigi continues to work on the dishcloth baby blanket. Gigi is also working on the Sidestream socks (by Cat Bordhi). Jasmin has been inspired this week! She has cast on the Picovoli shell, and she is using the Purespun Silk (by Pigeonroof Studios) in "Fatale".

Gigi is working on her Scandinavian socks (from the Little Box of Socks) during her lunch break. Jasmin finished the first Black and Tan Sock.

Inspiration has struck Jasmin like a Mac Truck, and it's called the Carnaby Street Pullover. Jasmin is planning to spin the yarn for this sweater, from a sheep named "Duchess" from Jean Near.

Gigi has cast on a pair of toe-up socks from Socks from the Toe Up in Mystery Yarn. Jasmin is nearly complete with the Adamas shawl. She learned a technique at Bobaknitting from Julia, and using a dental appliance threader, she's got a new way of adding beads to knitting. (Short tutorial will be posted.)

The pictures of Jasmin and Gigi's knitalong sweaters have been posted in their respective threads.

Mother Knows Best: (31:54)

Gigi and Jasmin discuss "Jenny Check"-ing - over packing knitting and yarn for travel. We recommend packing one main project, and one backup project for short trips, and the same thing PLUS your interchangeable needle kit if you're going to a knitting event.

In the event of enthusiastic shopping, Jasmin also recommends shipping your laundry home, and bring your haul back in your suitcases.

When Knitting Attacks: (37:51)

Gigi is nearly complete with her On the Vine scarf- which has dyed her hands blue. Gigi underestimated the necessary amount for the border on her dishcloth baby blanket. In her haste to finish a sock (to cast on it's mate), Jasmin makes herself carsick.

Gigi decided to cast on the Sidestream Sock. The Bosnian toe foiled her.

Jasmin talks about donating blood, and how it's impossible to knit while giving blood. Jasmin, Gigi, Erin have a chance encounter with Garnstudio/Drops' dad.

Review: (51:18)

Jasmin reviews Shipwrecked! (at Shakespeare Santa Cruz), and they talk about the need for arts/theater. Jasmin recommends calling your local box office for bargain tickets.

Director's Cut: Selecting a fleece - The Knitmore Girls Podcast

Sandi Luck (from Purlescence Yarns) discusses selecting fleeces.

When picking a fleece:

1- Smell it. Does it smell wrong? Sour? Ill. That's a "no" sign.
2- Has it been jacketed? They are less likely to grow mold or have sunbunt tips.
3- Is there a whole lot of vegetable matter?
4- Has the fleece been skirted?
5- How do the fibers look? Is there a noticeably damaged location?
6- Snap the lock by your ear. Does it sound like a guitar string? That's good. Crackling is bad.
7) Look out for short cuts.

If you can't touch the fleece, listen closely to the judging.

Judging is done by:

1) Staple length, by breed
2) Color quality
3) Strength of fiber
4) Damaged tips
5) quality of Shearing

With micron count: Low numbers are soft, high numbers are coarse.

This week: Merino fiber dyed by Pagewood Farms. Available by weight. Local folks, come learn to spin with us in our Drop Spinning Basics class, starting July 25.

On the Needles: (00:27)

ROAD TRIP! We go up to Berkeley with Miss Kalendar (from Brass Needles) to A Verb for Keeping Warm and Lacis.

Jasmin's favorite thing at Verb- the 70% Superwash Merino/ 30% Silk sock yarn. Gigi's is the Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend, dyed with Indigo. (Not on the Verb website yet, sorry!)

Lacis is delightfully overwhelming. Gigi describes a chatelaine. You can see Jasmin's pictures here. Jasmin discusses circular shawls, "Alison" shawls, the Mandala shawl that GretchDragon
knit for her, and the circular blocking wire. Gigi's favorite thing of the day were the Iris Silk pins!

Jasmin found a notions pouch at Target. (She shares Jackie's, of KIPing it Real, love of school supplies.) Not available online, but it's the Innovative Storage Designs Pencil Pouch.

We discuss "The Fashion Show". In the finale, Anna has a knit dress [picture #5] (reminiscent of the Venus Rising Cardigan, by Lucy Neatby).

Jasmin is knitting the Cable and Cowl Cardigan by Mathew Gnagy out of Cascade Eco + (in navy blue). Jasmin drafted up a chart, made some changes, and is loving her Leslie Wind Cable Needle Necklace.

Gigi is working on her acrylic baby blanket, and practiced different joins because of the Lucy Neatby DVDs. (Jasmin has a retraction, and directs you to look at the DVD content list on Lucy's site.)

Jasmin's Adamas has rows that are getting longer. And longer. And longer. Jasmin has been wearing her Katarina around and about!

Thanks to Susan Rife, for her lovely article in the Herald Tribune!

Mother Knows Best: (35:04)

Gigi discusses lining knits. She uses her Nicky Epstein Striped Houndstooth bag as an example. Gigi talks about a class she took on lining knits from Jean Frost (author of Jean Frost Jackets), and recommends that anyone interested in lining knits take it.

When KNITTERS Attack! (43:34)

Knitters are patient- UNLESS- they're waiting for a yarn shop to open.

Straw into Gold: ( 45:36)

Tour de Fleece: Stage 15. Jasmin admits to being a lousy draft rider.

Jasmin has finished her Mango from Redfish Dyeworks, her Albatross from Crown Mountain, and only has to ply Tallulah. Post your finished stuff/works in progress to the Team Spinmore thread!

Jasmin finished spinning some Tussah silk (from A Verb for Keeping Warm, color Vermillion II). She has wound the first ounce onto a plastic bobbin. (Alden Amos' book can be found here.) It is going to grow up to be a handspun Aeolian, which ChloeSparkle and Miss Kalendar are doing as well.

Jasmin is spinning some Abstract Fiber 50% Cashmere / 50% silk in "solids" (blue) which will grow up to be a Cold Mountain stole.

Gigi bought some "Gentle" from Lacis for a lace wrap.

On the Needles: (2:16)
Gigi thanks Dr. Gemma (and the Fiber Collective) for their hospitality during WWKIP day. Gigi replies to Episode 57 ("Now with more Sparkle").

Gigi has unearthed a pair of unfinished vanilla socks. She has used a channel island cast-on. Gigi applies a sewing solution to knit picot edging. (She recommends going down one needle size, do the picot row, and then go up to the needle size that you're planning to knit the sock on.) She is knitting it out of the Fancy Image Yarns in the "Giants" colorway.

Jasmin has only been working on her Katarina sweater. She knit the sweater on US size 6 (4mm) needles (in the Tess Yarns Silk and Merino), and is knitting the collar on US size 3 (3.25mm) needles, and is excited about photographing it finished with the Designs by Romi closures.

Gigi laments having no "grab and go" knitting. She talks about some new sock yarn (Berroco Sox Metallic) in a denim colorway, with some sparkle. She plans on knitting a pair of sparkly Mesmers.

Jasmin has finished a few pairs of socks, and has picked up some new sock yarn. She has picked up some Dream in Color Starry (in Grey Tabby) and Dream in Color Smooshy in Happy Forest. She also picked up some Claudia's Handpaint Silk for some lace knitting.

Gigi is knitting some of the Abstract Fiber Supersock (in Lady Macbeth), which she is planning on finishing soon. Gigi is knitting on her second Coriolis (in mystery Trekking), and has ripped back a sweater and is repurposing the yarn into a baby blanket.

Mother Knows Best: (24:26)

We discuss reviving knitting mojo.

Step 1: Stash dive.
Step 2: Check your Ravelry queue.
Step 3: In Ravelry, go into your "Friends" page, and select the "Friends Activity" tab.
Step 4: Profit.

Gigi recommends working in a different medium to kick-start knitting mojo. Jasmin also recommends finishing off UFOs. Or, bake cookies!

When Knitting Attacks: (29:12)

Gigi continues to try and work her way through the "Little Box of Socks". She chose a yarn that was too busy for the lace pattern, so the socks have been "auf'd". Gigi's pair of Scandanavian socks (from the LBoS) needed ripping out, because the colorwork was too tight.

Straw into Gold: (32:02)

This week Jasmin has been dyeing! She likes the Jacquard dyes and the Gaywool dyes. Jasmin mentions some safety things (ie, don't dye in your cooking pots, keep your dye pots separate from your cooking pots). Jasmin's order for dyeing: water, dye, a drop of Dawn to break the surface tension, stir, vinegar, add wool.

Jasmin has finished washing ALL of the fleece for the Lace Gauntlet Throwdown. She has borrowed a pair of the Forsyth Wool combs and a pair of Louet Mini combs and has found the weight of the larger combs to be a slight hindrance. (Check out the sockpr0n blog for tutorials on combing.) Jasmin has ordered a pair of the Forsyth mini wool combs along with the clamp.

Bring it On: (43:48)

Sandi and Nathania, from Purlescence Yarns, talk about trends they saw at TNNA. Fair isle is the new black! There are loads of new books with modern approaches to classic techniques (like Twined Knitting, by Laura Farson). There have been technological advances to reflect this, like  the Denise interchangeable crochet set which lends itself to techniques like Tunisian Crochet (and a companion book Tunisian Crochet by Sharon Silverman). Some new books reflecting the fair isle revival include Knits from the North Sea and Norwegian Handknits.

Not to be left out is Clara Parkes' Knitters book of Wool.

The Knit Kit is now coming in black with white accents. Would you like to see it in a stainless steel? Let us know.

Events: (00:30)
We will be in attendance at the Sock Summit (August 6-9), and will be doing a meet-and-greet with goodie bags! Stay tuned for details.

On the Needles: (2:25)

Chloe is working on a crocheted starfish blanket (out of Little Lovely Bulky Malabrigo) and a Windfall blanket.

Jasmin has finished her Monkeys! She knit them out of the Burgundy color of the Regia Silk. Chloe talks about having finished one Pomatomus and one Baudelaire equaling one pair of Cookie A socks. Jasmin finished her former "show notes" socks, out of Lisa Souza's "Serrano" superwash merino (in Mahogony). She ran short, so one toe is her "warm gold" in superwash merino.

Chloe is knitting a Dr. Who scarf. Jasmin's Katarina cardigan is nearly finished. She is knitting it out of the Tess Yarns Silk and Merino. Chloe discusses her method for setting in sleeves. If you're doing either the Katarina Knit-a-long or the Carli Knit-a-long, Julie Weisenberger has offered technical support along with purchase of her patterns. Chloe mentions the ScrunchableSunshine on a Cloudy Day socks, with modifications.

cowl. Jasmin continues to work on her Mother Knows Best: (21:45)

This week, we discuss answering Muggle questions while knitting in public. We also discuss "Crochate" and "crochenvy". They ask you, "What are the questions you get while knitting in public? How do you answer them?"

When Knitting Attacks: (32:46)

Jasmin has ripped out her Sunshine socks again for optimal fit. Shoot Jasmin an email (knitmoregirls@yahoo.com) for chart adjustments. (Jasmin also talks about the Dream in Color Starry, which is new at Purlescence.) Jasmin will also be ripping back her Cabletinis, since they are enormous.

After discussion about the source of Jasmin's toe-up sock ennui, Chloe suggests a heel swatch.

Straw into Gold: (42:53)

Jasmin answers Meghan's call out for the Lace Gauntlet Throwdown. Jasmin has been washing her fleeces in lock formation, using tulle. You can see pictures of the fleeces here.

Chloe has spun some Alpaca/Merino/Silk from Abstract Fiber in the Autumn colorway, which she Navajo-plied and knit a hat out of. Chloe spins on a Kromski Sonata.

Events: (00:27)

Saturday, June 13th- World Wide Knit in Public Day. Jasmin will be knitting at Santana Row with Miss Kalendar (from Brass Needles) and Tika (from Gives Good Knit).
Gigi will be knitting with the Fiber Collective in Los Angeles.

On the Needles: (02:06)

Gigi and Jasmin had a GREAT time at the Retzlaff Winery spinning event! (Jasmin talks about the Pygora/Wool lace yarn from Hollyhock Hollow farm.)

Jasmin has been on a finishing kick! She has finished her Houdini Socks. (You can find the cutting tutorial here.)

Gigi has finished her first sock out of the Abstract Fiber Supersock in Lady Macbeth. Gigi talks about a Lucy Neatby bind-off technique.

Jasmin has picked up her Mesmer socks again (you can find the Mesmer pattern here), and is in LOVE! She's knitting it in a burnt orange colorway of the Colinette Jitterbug.

Gigi finished her first Coriolis sock in a new pair. She has found herself immersed in using Cat Bordhi and Lucy Neatby techniques!

Jasmin is returning to her Monkey socks. Gigi and Jasmin discuss the 52 pair plunge. Jasmin recommends modifying these types of KALs with more reasonable expectations.

Jasmin tells a stash enhancement story, where she wheels and deals for some hot pink Koigu. She's looking for sweater suggestions for it.

Mother Knows Best: (21:25)

We discuss Netiquette and Ravelry.

When Knitting Attacks: (25:32)

Gigi is on her third try on her Coriolis. Jasmin has been Mesmerized, and has been having issues reading directions.

Gigi's Upstream socks are having issues, and she desperately needs a bout of startitis.

Jasmin talks about picking up a fleece for Meghan (from Stitch-it!), and misreading her text.

Straw into Gold: (33:26)

Jasmin bought a little Pygora (from Hollyhock Hollow Farms), and will talk about spinning it in a future podcast. Jasmin talks about overdyeing naturally colored fiber.

Jasmin talks about getting outstanding customer service from Schacht, and the "silencing a noisy bobbin" trick with White Lithium Grease.

Meghan, Erin, and Jasmin split two fleeces from Janet Heppler. Frank was a dark, 10 1/2 lb merino/corriedale mix. Luther is a white, 12 lb merino corriedale blend with super long staple length.

Meghan's grey cormo fleece came from Sue Reuser, as did a white cormo fleece that Erin and Jasmin are splitting.

Meghan has thrown down the gauntlet- if Jasmin hand-processes 4 lbs of fleece, Meghan will knit a lace shawl on smallish needles (US 5-6).

Jasmin mentions Aija's tutorials on processing fleeces in locks.

Gigi is working on the Riverbed sock (from Cat Bordhi's New Pathways in Knitting) in Abstract Fiber's Supersock (colorway: Lady Macbeth).

Jasmin is participating in the Brass Needles' Cabletini sock KAL. Jasmin is using Dream in Color Smooshy (in Midnight Derby) from her (someday) Tulip Baby Sweater kit.

Jasmin finished her Wool Peddler's Shawl. She put some Swarovski crystals in the edge to add a little glitter and weight to the shawl.

Jasmin is knitting a pair of Sunshine Socks (from Cookie A's Sock Innovation) out of Dream in Color Smooshy (in Into the Mystic). Jasmin has stated that the Sunshine socks will be the next Monkey. Gretchdragon was kind enough to give Jasmin a Mandala Lace shawl.

Mother Knows Best: (19:06)

Using your knitting to network and job-hunt. Jasmin talks about the Silicon Valley "Side door".

Gigi and Jasmin discuss some minor points of knitting/ networking / job hunting etiquette.

When Knitting Attacks: (30:36)

Gigi's sad, misshapen Coriolis socks got frogged. A knitting needle was collateral damage.

Jasmin talks about her Cabletini socks. She compares the beginning of the sock to the witches' feet (in the film, The Witches). They have been ripped out and re-started.

Jasmin talks about her Sunshine socks, and the changes she's made.

Bring it On: (43:36)

We discuss how to avoid knitting mistakes, and solve others.

1- Read all of the directions before you start knitting. Twice. (Jasmin is often defeated by "At the same time", "at each end".)
2- Swatch. Wash it.
3- Don't rip prematurely.

- When knitting lace, use lifelines.
- Make a photocopy of your pattern (for your personal use). Make notes in the margin. Keep it with your project.
- Keep all of the yarn for your project together.
- Jasmin mounts her charts on cardstock (Pound o' Paper)

Congrats on graduating, Tika!!!

On the Needles: (1:33)
Gigi has finished knitting Carli. She'll be photographing them with the pins from Romi.

Summer means lace knitting for Jasmin. She is working on her Wool Peddler's Shawl. Jasmin admits objecting to the seemingly exponential growth of triangular shawls.

Gigi's Marta is nearing completion, as are her Par 5 socks in Malabrigo Sock. Jasmin is still working on her Aran Pocket Shawl. Gigi is working on the Riverbed sock out of the Abstract Fiber SuperSock in "Macbeth". Jasmin is working on a sock out of the Abstract Fiber Supersock in "Newport".

Gigi is going on a blocking binge! She's blocking her Chic Pulli in Cascade Venezia. Jasmin is planning on pulling two UFO triangular lace shawls (the Icarus and the Adamas Shawls).

Jasmin and Gigi agree that the Waterfall shell (from the Spring issue of Verena Knitting) would be fantastic for the Tess Microfiber Ribbon. Jasmin also thinks the Aleita Shell (from Interweave Knits, Spring 2008) would be a great use of the Tess Ribbon. Jasmin is also excited about the Sandrine sweater.

Bring it On! (18:12)

Jasmin is on an organization binge. She is using the comforter bags (seen on the sockpr0n blog) to separate fleeces, and yarns by dyer.

Mother Knows Best: (23:05)

Gigi talks about blocking using cardboard cutting boards in conjunction with Knitter's Blocks.

Events: (27:17)

- Saturday, June 6th: Spinning at the Retzlaff winery. There's a $5 entry fee, and a potluck lunch.
- Saturday, June 13th: WorldWide Knit in Public day. Jasmin will be at Santana Row (between Cohiba and Sunglasses on the Row), Gigi will be in Los Angeles.
- August 6-9: Sock Summit in Portland, Oregon. We will be staying at the Mariott Courtyard in Portland. We'll be doing a meet-and-greet with goodie bags!

Straw into Gold: (31:03)

The last of Jasmin's fleeces from Booneville arrived, processed and beautiful from Shari at Morro Fleece Works. Jasmin talks about Duchess, a 1/2 blood, blue/gray fleece from Jean Near.

Jasmin plied the cashmere/silk from Abstract Fiber this week, and discovered some issues with her WooLee Winder. Jasmin needs help- she needs the directions on how to disassemble/reassemble hers.

On the Needles: (5:47)

Gigi is working on her Carli again! Jasmin's Katarina is languishing a bit. Jasmin is on a shawl kick. She is working on her Aran Pocket Shawl as well as the Wool Peddler's Shawl.

Gigi is blocking her way through a mountain of UFOs. Carli got blocked, Marta got blocked, Katarina has been blocked.

Gigi has turned the heel on her Par 5 socks.

Mother Knows Best: (15:33)

Gigi and Jasmin discuss the virtues of stashing, and how a healthy stash can make your knitting recession-proof.

When Knitting Attacks: (22:17)

Jasmin is having trust issues with the chart on the Wool Peddler's shawl. Gigi sews her sweater together more creatively than normal.

The Knitmore Girls remind you to call your mother!

On the Needles: (1:50)

Jasmin and Andrew took Gigi to see the new Star Trek movie at the IMAX theater. They talk about the sheep on Vulcan and knits in the movie.

Gigi works on the Katarina sweater. They discuss the Knit(more)-a-long. Jasmin talks about her Aran Pocket Wrap (from Folk Shawls), which she is knitting out of sport weight Jade Sapphire cashmere.

Jasmin is seeking inspiration in weird ways. She has finished her first sock out of the Abstract Fiber supersock in "Newport". Jasmin wanted to knit lace, and cast on the Theatrical Lace shawl Shawls and Scarves) in Malabrigo Lace.

Jasmin decided to finish a pair of Gentleman's Fancy Socks for Andrew (from Knitting Vintage Socks), but some insulation got into the knitting bag, so Jasmin is looking for solutions on how to get insulation out of knitting.

Mother Knows Best: (21:15)

Gigi discusses blocking. Jasmin mentions Yarn Dogs' event to support their Avon Walk for Breast Cancer team, Knitters for Knockers.

When Knitting Attacks: (30:03)

Jasmin talks about losing the second sock (in this pair, made of Tess Yarns' Peruvian Sock) while out watching Wolverine.

Gigi's sleeves for her Katarina are too big. She is on a knitting-three-sleeves binge. Jasmin laments a troubled Monkey Sock.

Jasmin talks about over-dyeing "ugly" colors. Jasmin overdyed the Jade Sapphire "BlueBlood" (which is red) with navy blue Jacquard acid dye. It is a lovely shade of eggplant now.

Straw into Gold: (43:28)

Jasmin talks about her Tallulah swatch for Mariah; the 5-ply yields 4.5 sts/inch on a US 6/4mm needle.

Jasmin also mentions some dandruff-y cashmere that she finished. (Description of woolen spinning can be found in this episode of Stitch it!) It is going to grow up to be lace, and is being spun on the Schacht-Reeves.

Jasmin bought some qiviut fiber in Alaska last year, and is a little intimidated by it. So, she is practicing on Bison roving. (You can order the bison roving from Purlescence Yarns.)

Jasmin is spinning Lina, who is a chocolate brown hogget merino fleece (from Janet Heppler, bought at the Retzlaff Winery spinning day last year). Jasmin determines, after ordering some of the comforter bags (that Aija talks about on the sockpr0n blog), that she has a lot of fleeces.

The More You Know (00:35)

We will be announcing the winners of the "name the listener suggestions segment" contest in Episode 51.

Go and listen to Knaked Knits!

On the Needles (2:05)

Jasmin goes on a finishing binge! This week she has finished the Geoff Scarf (from the Jade Sapphire Scarves for Him kit), and her Abby. She also reunites with her Ice Queen.

Gigi has stalled out on her Carli- it needs to be blocked. Gigi is working on her Marta, knit out of the Wild Plum 3 colorway in the Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted. Look for Julie's Bias bind-off tutorial here.

Jasmin talks about her podcast sock, knit out of Abstract Fiber's sock yarn (in Newport). Gigi discusses "binge knitting", and Jasmin decides that she wants to knit her way through "Sock Innovation" (find the errata here, thanks Betty!). You can find the Cookie A group here.

Tika is knitting a pair of Shark's socks for her younger charge, and talks about having "car knitting" - a pair of socks for impromptu knitting. Tika is also knitting a scarf from Victorian Lace Today along with an old friend.

Gigi makes pom-poms for this scarf.

Mother Knows Best (21:17)

Tika and Jasmin discuss Mother's Day. Tika and her brother are pooling their resources to buy their mom a ballwinder and swift for Mother's Day. They discuss the Knitpicks ballwinder and the cost difference between those and the Royal ballwinders.

Tika suggests taking nice photos, printing them out, and framing them nicely.

When Knitting Attacks (30:04)

Jasmin can't follow a pattern. After a year of the Ice Queen sitting aside, she realizes that she needs to read the pattern. Gigi can't count.

Tika's Seamless Yoke Sweater has a decrease issue.

Review: (34:53)

Andrew joins in to discuss the Knit Kit (

On the Needles: (2:13)

Thanks for all of your feedback about the Galina interview!

Gigi has finished the first stage of her Carli. She has shortened the sleeves by an inch to compenstate for being petite. Jasmin has completed knitting the body, the first sleeve, and is nearly finished with the second sleeve of her Katarina.

Gigi and Jasmin received a special package (from Rosemary Hill) of closures for the Knit(more)-A-Long. Here's what they look like:

Photobucket

Photobucket

You can purchase them here.

Jasmin used the crocheted provisional cast-on that she learned in Lucy Neatby's class (or at Tika's knee) when she cast on the sleeves. She notices that the sleeves will need to be blocked a little more agressively. Jasmin and Steamy will work on this.

Gigi and Jasmin talk about the Knit(more)-a-long being at your own pace. Jasmin has cast on her Carli in Malabrigo "Little Lovely".

Jasmin bought one of the Jade Sapphire "Cashmere Scarf For Him" kits (in "Five O'Clock Shadow") from Bobbin's Nest. She talks about purchasing habits that have changed because of the Social Pressure Experiment. Jasmin talks about using the ChiaoGoo needles.

Gigi has completed the second ball of her Buffalo Gals yarn for the On the Vine scarf. Gigi talks about the intelligent, couture quality of the Marta sweater. (You can find the KnitScience episode that deals with couture here.) Gigi talks about a yarn acquisition that isn't red (Jo Sharp Aran Tweed in a plummy color).

Mother Knows Best: (34:03)

Gigi recommends alternating skeins of handpainted yarns to avoid color shock. Jasmin agrees that this is also a good idea for evening out handspun yarns. Jasmin talks about her handspun Ribbi Cardi, and how one sleeve has significantly more rows than the other because of the variation in handspun thickness.

When Knitting Attacks: (38:59)

Gigi miscounts on her Marta. Jasmin discovers a "bad bobbin", and it takes discussion to discover that it's not her, it's the bobbin.

Review: (44:29)

This week, Andrew joins us to review Cookie A's Sock Innovation. We give it six inspired thumbs up. Jasmin talks about Cookie's more acheivable socks (the Monkey socks, Hedera). Jasmin talks about using Dream in Color Smooshy, Regia Silk, or Tanis Fiber Arts sock yarn for these socks. Jasmin thinks this may be her "Little Box of Socks".

Straw Into Gold: (54:41)

Jasmin talks about spinning the Abstract Fiber 50% cashmere/50% silk roving (in Hydrangea). Jasmin talks about spinning both cashmere and silk at higher speeds to get it finer and tighter.

For a really excellent definition of "woolen" spinning, go give this episode of Stitch-It a listen.

To practice spinning cashmere, use cotton roving. Jasmin encourages you to spin your good stuff and not "save" it.

Jasmin is nearly done spinning Tallulah.

Gigi talks about Carli - her sweater for the Knit(more)-A-Long. Jasmin talks about her new closet from the Container Store (the Elfa storage stuff). Jasmin talks about not planning out her knitting sufficiently, and the construction of the Cocoknits hoodie (Katje).

Jasmin talks about some of the issues regarding Katarina. She used Steamy to block the sweater.

Gigi has worked a little bit on her "On the Vine" scarf. Jasmin talks about knitting her CoachellaTess Ribbon
top out of.

Contest:
(19:28)

We announce the winners for the "What do YOU want to hear?" contest. The "name the listener segment" contest will close at the end of April.

Mother Knows Best: (25:20)

Gigi and Jasmin discuss color theory. Jasmin likes to buy her blouses at New York and Company. Jasmin suggests using Crayola Crayons for color reference. Gigi's sewing teacher used magenta and orange fabric as coloring calibrators.

Gigi discusses blue undertones vs. yellow undertones. Quilters use a color wheel for selecting complimentary colors. Gigi picked up paint chips at a decorating store to use as complimentary color ideas, and then bought yarn in those colors.

Jasmin theorizes that we are drawn to colors that look good on us. Jasmin advises against painting your skin. Color wheels are available at art stores, quilting stores, and your LYS.

When Knitting Attacks: (37:04)

Gigi didn't notice that her Malabrigo (out of Jasmin's stash) was from different dye lots, so she had to frog a ball's worth of knitting, which was especially hard, since she had done a marvelous job splicing both ends of that ball. Also, she sometimes can't count up to four and ended up with two stitches too many in her cardigan.

Jasmin's managed to misread and miscound on her Coachella top. On the third try, she finally manages to get it right. She is enjoying the bust shortrowing.

Straw into Gold: (45:24)

Jasmin has bought more plastic bobbins. The "romney thing" is made up of one ply of each of the following: burgundy romney (from Morro Fleece Works), light silver Lincoln/Corriedale, gunmetal grey Lincoln/Corriedale, and a strand of natural black romney that Gigi is coveting.

Jasmin is planning to full this four colored yarn to make it bloom. There is a video of her doing it on YouTube. She is planning to spin this more lofty so it will be softer with a soft haze.

CORRECTION:

Jasmin misspoke. Worsted spun yarn is durable and long wearing, not woolen. She is spinning Tallulah (a merino fleece) worsted so that it can be knitted into the Mariah cardigan. Also, she is spinning Suzie Q from Crown Mountain Farms.

Jasmin's fleeces from Boonville and the Monterey Fleece Auction are arriving. Shearing season is rapidly approaching, and Jasmin will be talking about how to pick a good fleece in future episodes.

Also, next week, listen for a special "Easter Egg" for our listeners: an interview with Galina Khmeleva, author of Gossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls.

Knit's up has moved to Libsyn. If you're having problems updating your feeds, find our tutorial here.

On the Needles: (2:00)

Gigi is making good progress on her On the Vine scarf.

Jasmin cast on a sock to chase away her bad knitting mojo. She is using the Abstract Fibers "Supersock" in Newport. (Jasmin and Gigi will be reviewing this yarn in a later podcast.) Jasmin also discusses working with the square knitting needles. Jasmin suggests that LYSes should have "tester" needles so that knitters can try them. (Jasmin refers to the Addi Turbo interchangeable review episode.)

Gigi is working on the Par Five sock out of the brown Malabrigo Sock. Jasmin tries to understand golf. Gigi describes golf as "banhoff".

The Knit(more)-A-Long!

Jasmin's: Katarina (by CocoKnits), in Tess Yarns' Silk and Merino.

(Jasmin is knitting hers in one piece, as opposed to the way that the pattern is written. She talks about how she blocked her Twist.) Jasmin is knitting this at a tighter gauge than is recommended in the pattern (Jasmin is knitting it at 5 sts/6 rows per inch) because she disagrees with both the math in the pattern, the schematic, and the gauge of the recommended yarn.

Gigi's: Carli (by CocoKnits) in Malabrigo worsted, Burgundy. Gigi is matching gauge and knitting the pattern as it is written, thus far.

They talk about substituting yarns and the need to occasionally recalculate a pattern. They also discuss picking colors.

Mother Knows Best: (30:24)

Gigi and Jasmin discuss warm weather knits; they LOVE the Tess Yarns' Microfiber Ribbon. Some of Jasmin's favorite patterns include the ribbed turtleneck (by Jill Ramos), the chevron ribbed tank by Ann Budd, and the perfect periwinkle turtleneck tube vest from Fitted Knits.

Jasmin seals the end of the ribbon with Fray-Check, talks about the best way to wind it,

Straw into Gold: (42:13)

Jasmin is still spinning Talullah, she wants to knit something with cables (like Mariah). Jasmin talks about "swatching" your spinning. Jasmin is going to use her Maggie mini skein-winder to make tiny test skeins.

Reviews: (46:10)

They review the Malabrigo sock yarn. Four Knitmore thumbs up!

They also review the Leslie Wind cable needle necklace. (Video tutorials can be found here.) Jasmin loved it, Gigi didn't.

Gigi has cast on a pair of socks out of Abstract Fibers' Lady Macbeth colorway. Lady Macbeth says she wants to be a Coriolis. Gigi is knitting a pair of Par Five socks out of the Malabrigo sock yarn (in brown). Gigi and Jasmin both went stashdiving for projects.

Jasmin talks about being the Rain Man of yarn (when looking for the yarn for her Cire-Perdue). Gigi is knitting some tiger-stripey socks out of Fancy Image's sock yarn. Gigi has been swatching!

Gigi and Jasmin will be doing a Knitmore-A-Long, where we'll have several projects that we'll be working on. Simultaneously. Stay posted for details.

When Knitting Attacks: ( 18:14)

Jasmin's knitting HATES her. Jasmin has ripped out her Coriolis sock ANOTHER two times. Then, her pink cashmere swatches refused to cooperate, despite being knit on fabulous Asciano needles. (You can find some of the Holz and Stein needles here, by the way. Which are Alison's favorites.)

Jasmin thought the Chic Knits hoodie would be a set-in sleeve, fitted hoodie, because she wasn't paying attention. Jasmin finds that she is less patient when she lacks knitting.

Gigi knit her "Franklin's Panopticon" socks on itty needles with the same stitch count, which resulted in a too-small sock. Gigi is also looking for a fine-gauge cable needle. Gigi also had some issues reproducing the channel island cast-on, from lack of practice.

Listen to Gives Good Knit!

Straw into gold: (36:26)

The fleeces from the Monterey Wool Auction and Booneville are starting to arrive! Jasmin talks about having multiple spinning projects. She uses a bobbin winder and small plastic bobbins, and spins large projects 1 0z/29g at a time, lets it rest for 24 hours, then moves it to a plastic bobbin. This saves money on additional bobbins, and allows for more even spinning throughout large projects.

Jasmin is plying the "Romney Thing". It is a 4-ply yarn, 1 ply of burgundy romney, 1 ply of natural black romney, 1 ply of Sheila (Lincoln/Corriedale from Janet Heppler)- silver/grey, 1 ply of Carlos (Lincoln/Corriedale from Janet Heppler)- gunmetal grey. (We got Carlos at the Retzlaff Winery spinning day two years ago.) This was when Jasmin discovered the processing wonders of Shari at Morro Fleece Works.

In getting her spinning chops back, Jasmin grabbed some Crown Mountain Superwash merinoAqualung) to re-calibrate her spinning.

Jasmin is in love with Talullah; a charcoal grey merino that is so soft that it will curl your toes. Jasmin is spinning Talullah fine and tight, and thinks she will make a lovely Twist.

Gigi finished a pair of vanilla ribbed socks in the Kaffe Fasset Regia, a pair of vanilla Claudia's Handpaints Argyle.  Gigi has also finished the first skein of yarn for her On the Vine scarf.

Jasmin finished her pair of Ellen's Half-Pint Farm socks (out of the Merino/Tencel sock yarn) in the greens. Jasmin is "chain-knitting" her socks. She cast on the Creatively Dyed Calypso (80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon) in the Jamaica colorway. The color reminds Jasmin of Lisa Souza's South Pacific colorway.

Gigi is working on a former UFO - she is working on her white Einstein jacket again.

Jasmin and Gigi discuss knitting with neutrals for "lasting" garments. (You can see the "Mimosa yellow" shawl here.) They discuss balancing fashion and timeliness with how long it will take to finish the project. Jasmin talks about Tim Gunn's 10 essential items list and how to encorporate that into your knitting.

Jasmin and Gigi will be swatching this week! Gigi will be swatching some of the Tess Yarns' Silk and Merino (in charcoal grey) for a Cocoknits design. Jasmin has some of the same yarn, but in a pale blue from a few years ago. Jasmin is using it for the Cire-Perdue from the third Norah Gaughan book.

Gigi brought over a children's loom so that Jasmin can determine whether or not she really, really wants to weave.

CONTEST!

Go into our Ravelry group and suggest show topics in the "What do you want to hear about?" thread.

Mother Knows Best: (26:04)

Gigi and Jasmin discuss matching yarns and patterns. Vanilla socks are a great way of testing new techniques (like the channel island cast-on). We also encourage you to treat your swatches the way you would treat the garment.

When Knitting Attacks! (33:26)

Gigi has been too efficient with her knitting, and ran out of on-the-go vanilla socks. Cat Bordhi is a genius, and Jasmin is not, and proves it while working on a pair of Coriolis socks. (The test drive pair is in Myra Hansen's Fancy Image Yarns sock yarn.) Jasmin notices the correlation between knitting attacks and the hours in which they happen. Also, her complete inability to do math into the late hours of the evening.

Straw into Gold: (40:50)

Jasmin is spinning 70% Alpaca/30% Silk roving from Abstract Fibers in a deep, rich blue/black colorway. Jasmin talks about showing surface area and shine while spinning, spinning posture, and is honest about how she feels about spinning cotton. Jasmin recommends taking a beginning spinning class from Sandi Luck (at Purlescence) if you're in the Bay Area, and any spinning class from Judith MacKenzie McCuin.

(Next week, Jasmin will talk about cleaning spinning wheels.)

Jasmin talks about spinning merino/silk batts from Crystal Creek Fibers for Gigi (pictured above). Jasmin talks about using a Fricke skeinwinder with a yardage counter. Jasmin also had spun up some of the Fat Cat Knits 50% SW Merino/50% tencel roving in Spring Bulbs. Jasmin also talks about winding up the Black Magic Woman that she had spun up and was still resting on the bobbins.

On the Needles:

Gigi is working on (mostly) vanilla socks this weeks. She has finished her Bulky Boot Socks, and has started a vanilla sweater, but ripped it out in favor of a new pattern.

Events:

Jasmin and Gigi discuss Stitches West. Jasmin and Gigi took the same classes - mostly. Colleen and Jasmin took Ergonomcis of knitting with Carson Demers, where they learned some stretches, life strategies for balancing knitting with physical health. Jasmin recommends standing up during commercial breaks.

On the way to class, Jasmin was accosted by Cat Bordhi! Jasmin and Gigi, at Cat's recommendation, are going to try and get to Sock Summit. Thursday evening, Jasmin and Gigi went to the market preview.

Using her wish list, Jasmin bought some batts (in Purr-ple and Tropical Fruit) and Wensleydale from Lisa Souza. Jasmin thinks it is going to grow up to be a Ribbi Pulli. Jasmin also got some Superwash merino in "Graphite".

Jasmin got some interesting fibers from Tactile (babydoll, carbonized bamboo) and A Verb for Keeping Warm (targhee). Jasmin also ran into WonderMike, of YKnit notoriety. Jasmin bought a kit from Sheldrige Farms (the Inverted V top).

Jasmin fell in love with Abstract Fibers. Jasmin bought a set of lace circular needles from Asciano Fibers, made of Cocobolo.

Gigi fell in love with the Cocoknits patterns. Gigi found some Berroco Ultra Alpaca in a beautiful peacock blue and some red Kauni at WEBS.

Friday:

Jasmin and Gigi took Lucy Neatby's "Cool Socks - A" class all day. They learned the channel island cast-on, as well as loads of other nifty tips and tricks. (We will be reviewing her fantastic DVDs on the podcast, courtesy of Lucy Neatby and Sheldrige Farms.)

Saturday:

Jasmin and Gigi met Dr. Gemma of CogKNITive! Jasmin and Gigi had the meet and greet. Jasmin and Andrew went by the Redfish Dyeworks booth, where she got some mango colored 80% merino/ 20% tussah silk roving and Andrew picked out some 50/50 Silk Merino (project TBD). Jasmin picked up some replacement roving in Freestone Firecracker from the Royal Hare.

After the market, Jasmin, Gigi, and Rosemary (from Designs by Romi) went to the party at Bobbin's Nest, which was lovely. Afterwards, we took a brief detour to get some AMAZING frozen yogurt, then went to the show-and-tell at Purlescence.

Sunday:

Jasmin and Gigi took the "Design Your Own Sock Architecture" class with Cat Bordhi, who we chatted with in September. Combined with the Lucy Neatby class, our minds were blown.

Jasmin went to the show floor to pick up some Oak Grove yarn (to darn a pair socks) for Andrew. Jasmin went to talk to Cheryl Oberle, and while Andrew was waiting in line to pay, he picked up two skeins in "Stones". Jasmin also picked up some of the Creatively Dyed sock yarn to test drive, NOT in pinks and purples, selected by Andrew.

Gigi bought some Silk/Merino from Tess Yarns in a beautiful charcoal grey, which will become a Cocoknits sweater. (Sweater TBD.)

At the show, Jasmin and Gigi got audio with Lucy Neatby, Galina
Khmeleva, Cheryl Oberle, and Lily Chin.

Administrative stuff:

Jasmin and Gigi are trying to get to Sock Summit, and they need your help. A donation of $5 or more gets you a logo magnet, and for a donation of $10 or more, we'll send you a logo pin (and a magnet).

We will be adding a new segment called "Straw into Gold" about spinning! Until then, Meghan from Stitch-It has an AWESOME, regular spinning segment.

We need ideas for contests! Send them our way.

Sprinting towards Stitches! - Episode 41 - The Knitmore Girls

This week's episode is sponsored by:

Events: (00:33)

Stitches West meetup! We'll be in the Purlescence booths (640 & 740) on Saturday, February 28th from 2-4 PM. The goodie bags are awesome. We will be holding back 1 goodie bag (out of 100) and doing a contest for those who couldn't make it to the meetup.

We will be including a pin in the goodie bag. Going forward, a donation of $10 or more will get you some of our permission slips/business cards AND a Knitmore Girls logo pin.

On the Needles: (7:56)

Gigi has (sort of) finished an UFO. The Ribbon Twist sweater needs seaming and blocking, but the knitting is done.  Jasmin finished her Twist!  In a couple of episodes, we'll post a video in the show notes on how to attach buttons using Gigi's couture technique. Jasmin used the Malabrigo sock yarn (in "Lettuce") to set in the sleeves, since it is a stronger yarn.

Jasmin pulled an 8-year-old UFO out of her stash. She is working on finishing the ex-boyfriend sweater. She will be reworking the cowl from a "cheater" cowl to a true, short-rowed cowl collar. Jasmin will be blocking her Santa Fe Wrap, which she will be wearing to Stitches.

Gigi continues to work on her Bulky boot socks and her Scandanavian pattern socks (from the ubiquitous Little Box of Socks), and finds Fair Isle addictive.

Jasmin and Gigi talk about Ravelry, queues, and tagging. We also talk about using leftover sock yarn to knit the Fish hats from Knitty. Jasmin and Gigi talk about their favorite handpainters (Tess Yarns, Lisa Souza Dyeworks, Ellen's Half-Pint Farm), and style aesthetics versus knitting aesthetics.

Jasmin talks about purging old knit socks; Gigi talks about storage for knit socks. Jasmin has cast on a pair of Ellen's Half-Pint farm 50% Superwash Merino/50% Tencel socks in greens. Gigi continues to work on her On the Vine scarf.

Mother Knows Best: (34:37)

Stitches West tips, Part IV:
- Don't shop flustered. If you start to feel flustered or panicked, go to the bathroom, wash your hands, have a snack, then revisit. (Jasmin is packing energy gels/blocks.)
- Review your purchases. If you go for more than one day, spread out your purchases and take a good look. Make sure you've got the right quantities, everything from your wishlist, etc.

When Knitting Attacks! (44:11)

Jasmin can't count to 3. Gigi was assaulted by patterns at the fabric store.

Do the Twist! - Episode 40 - The Knitmore Girls

This week's episode has been sponsored by:

This week, we are joined by Tika (host of Gives Good Knit) and Andrew.

Events: (00:58)

Stitches West meetup- Saturday, February 28th from 2-4 PM in the Purlescence Yarns booth. If you haven't bought your market passes yet, go to the Knitting Universe Website, and the online promo code (for $2 off admission) is: MPCW. Come meet us and get some sweet swag!

On the Needles: (2:51)

Gigi finished her second blue Regia Saturn sock. She has also found another two balls of duplicate Regia in her stash. She has finished her pair of vanilla Brown Eyed Girl handspun socks. She has finished a dark red stocking cap (out of Cascade 220 Superwash).

Jasmin has started weaving in her own ends, inspired by Tika duplicate stitching in her ends. Jasmin, after a lack of knitting mojo on Monday, started her Twist in Apple Green Malabrigo
worsted on Tuesday. By Sunday, the body was done and blocked. Jasmin is obsessed with this sweater. Also, the entire sweater will be knit in 4 skeins.

Jasmin talks about her WIP storage/"organization"/green room system.

Jasmin's changes to Twist:

- The pattern is written to knit the body in 3 pieces, Jasmin knit it in one piece.
- The pattern is written to knit the sleeves flat; Jasmin knit them in the round.
- The pattern calls for US 6/7 needles; Jasmin is knitting them on US 5/6.

Jasmin waxes poetic about Twist, and wanders around hollering "My kingdom for a bag of Cadmium!" (Malabrigo)

Tika's Coraline gloves make Lime and Violet's Daily Chum AND Neil Gaiman's blog!

Jasmin talks about Valentine's Day. Andrew bought her a pair of yarn ball earrings and a matching pendant from Rosemary Hill. He also found the perfect buttons for Jasmin's Twist cardigan.

Gigi talks about the Mini Mochi sock, and noticed that knitting it center-pull untwists the yarn.

Mother Knows Best: (26:45)

Stitches West tips, part III, courtesy of Andrew.

Andrew's theory of yarn quality: when buying a yarn for the first time, buy one skein (or one project's worth) in order to determine knots per skein, colorfastness, washability, etc.  He also talks about the importance of swatching right away.

(If you hate swatching, knit an Elizabeth Zimmermann Swatch Cap!) Also, swatches can be saved for future blanket projects. Alternatively, you could use them as decor in a curio coffee table.

When Knitting Attacks: (39:11)

Tika and Bree are doing a virtual KAL. Tika forgot to mark where on the chart she was, rips out, and starts over.

Jasmin attempts to be smarter than the Twist pattern. She discovers that she CAN follow directions! Tika suggests using a highlighter to highlight the "AT THE SAME TIME" in the patterns.

Reviews: (48:08)

SWTC Tofutsies sock yarn. Jasmin doesn't like it because she finds it splitty, Tika does like it, but isn't sure yet if she would purchase more.

Events: (00:37)

Stitches West meet and greet! Come see us at the Purlescence booth, Saturday, February 28th from 2-4 PM. And, swag!

On the Needles: (3:10)

Gigi is making good progress on her On the Vine scarf. Jasmin is trying to do 2 rows every night on her Ene's Scarf.

Jasmin has finished her Bird of Paradise socks. She has also finished her black cashmere Jacoby mitts. She's thinking about knitting some argyle wristers.

Gigi is nearly done with the Bulky Boot Socks, and has been making steady progress on her Scandinavian socks. She is also nearly done with the Rowan Ribbon Twist sweater.

Jasmin is making steady progress on her Modern Quilt Wrap. Jasmin has been spinning! She has finished spinning the singles of the Black Magic Woman, and it is resting on the bobbins waiting to be plied.

Jasmin and Gigi wax poetic about knitting with the Wild Plum colorway of the Lamb's Pride Worsted. Jasmin wants to knit a Twist cardigan out of it.

Chloe went to Unwind in Burbank and picked up Jasmin's PERFECT color of green (Apple Green) in Malabrigo.

Mother Knows Best: (16:19)

Jasmin and Gigi offer suggestions on how to manage your budget at Stitches.

Holidays with the Knitmores: (22:58)

Gift ideas for your beloved knitter:

- A ball winder and an umbrella swift. (Jasmin LOVES her Bluster Bay swift.)
- Flaxseed/aromatherapy heat/cold packs.
- Shoes to wear handknit socks with.

Gift ideas for your beloved non-knitter:

- Think about what they like to do. Upgrade it. (Example, if they like to drive, get their car detailed.)
- If they're a fan of the remote control, get an all-in-one remote (we like that one).
- A backrest for reading/watching TV in bed. (Jasmin likes this one.)

When Knitting Attacks! (32:26)

Sock gnomes have made off with Gigi's sock yarn. Jasmin loses a filling to caramel, and is considering knitting some cashmere Jacoby mitts for her dentist, who came in on a Sunday to fix her tooth.

Reviews: (38:39)

Jasmin and Gigi review Crystal Palace Mini Mochi (we're using color 101), and Hiya Hiya bamboo circular needles. We compare Mini Mochi to Noro Kureyon Sock, and copare the Hiya Hiya bamboo circs to Crystal Palace bamboo circs, KA bamboo circs, and Clover bamboo circs.

(If you can't get this yarn or these needles at your local yarn store, please call Purlescence, let them know you're a listener, and order it there.)

Warming up for Stitches! - Episode 38 - The Knitmore Girls

This week's episode has been sponsored by:

purl logo

On the Needles: (00:32)

Gigi has a bunch of vanilla socks on the needles. Gigi wasn't happy with her progress on her "On the Vine" scarf, so she has been sitting and doing a repeat every day after lunch, which is working well for her.

Jasmin has started Ene's Scarf (which she isn't sure of the pronunciation of) from Scarf Style out of Artyarns Cashmere 1. (This was part of her half-off cashmere haul.) She has knit the first eight rows so far. This project has taught her that the rubber Bryson Stitch markers and the Addi lace needles do not mix.

Gigi is still working with the Brown Eyed Girl handspun socks. They're not dyeing this color anymore, but if you call Klaus (at Crown Mountain Farms) and ask him for a color that is close, he'll help you out. (Tell him we sent you!)

Jasmin has finished spinning 1 oz of Merry Meadows cormo and silk (in spring green). She has spun it very fine, so she's working on Black Magic Woman from Crown Mountain Farms.

Gigi has started the Bulky Boot Socks from the Little Box of Socks. Gigi has also started the Scandanavian Sock pattern (also from the LBoS). They discuss the two-handed fair isle technique that Ann and Eugene Bourgeois (of Philosopher's Wool) teach.

Jasmin has finished knitting the Santa Fe Wrap. Gigi unearthed an UFO made of Rowan Ribbon Twist (in black/pink), which is now becoming a sweater for Jasmin.

While listening to Cast-On, Jasmin was inspired to knit a Modern Quilt Wrap in Noro Kureyon Sock. (Jasmin is knitting hers in color S188.) Jasmin is knitting hers on size 4 US/3.5mm needles. Jasmin is knitting it at a tighter gauge and will block it to size for aesthetic reasons. (Jasmin downloaded it from knittingdaily.com .)

Mother Knows Best: (26:55)

Stitches West tips!

1- Determine your budget.
2- Stick to your budget.

Strategies: (A note to Dr. Gemma from CogKNITive- our strategies are less helpful than yours for real life.)
- Make your wishlist. (Jasmin's includes one of Lisa Souza's batts, some wensleydale, and some polwarth. The polwarth is Meghan's, of Stitch-it fame, fault.)
- Gigi will be buying some sock yarn.
- Jasmin encourages you to take your list on a post-it.
- Go through your stash so you don't replicate colors that you have a lot of in your stash.
- Always buy more yarn, rather than less.

Tips for shopping the market:
- Gigi walks through the market the first time with the vendor catalog. If she sees something she likes, she makes a note. She does zero purchasing on the first round. (Jasmin is the same, but will purchase if she comes across something on her wishlist.)
- On Gigi's second walkthrough, she eliminates items that she's not in love with.
- On Gigi's third walkthrough, she starts making purchases. If it was meant to be, it will still be there.
- First time attendees: Go with someone who has gone before.
- Eat a good breakfast.
- Wear good shoes.
- Pack a healthy lunch and bring a bottle of water. (Jasmin recommends getting a BPA-free Nalgene bottle and clipping it to your bag with a carabiner.)
- Make sure to sit. And socialize!
- Shop from vendors who are out of your normal area.
- Don't buy yarns that you have access to at your LYS. Hold off on those purchases until the month AFTER Stitches.

Holidays with the Knitmores: (43:28)

Valentine's Day gift suggestions for knitters/spinners:

- A Netflix subscription and/or a Roku box
- A bouquet of handpainted sock yarns.
- Beautiful knitting/spinning tools
- Unusual/beautiful drop spindles. (Jasmin is especially fond of the Golding drop spindles.)
- Fiber!
- A class
- A gift certificate for time to knit, uninterrupted.
- Really good quality chocolate.
- A lovely mug, and possibly a mug warmer.
- A trip to an out-of-town fiber festival.

When Knitting Attacks! (49:01)

Gigi installs an enclosed zipper BEAUTIFULLY. And backwards.

The Crown Mountain Superwash Merino (in Black Magic Woman) is so lovely, even Hana (the Akita puppy) wanted some.

(Public Service Announcement: Do not leave fiber or yarn out where your pets can get to it. Ingested yarn or roving can cause obstructions which can be fatal to your pet.)

On the Needles: (00:30)

Check our Ravelry group for the "Knit a Square for Alison" project. Jasmin has knit two squares, which are blocking on Knitter's Blocks.

Gigi declares that she is tired of knitting vanilla socks, and has decided to knit vanilla sweaters instead. Gigi is itching to knit some patterned socks. "Vanilla socks are SO last year."

Jasmin is still working on her Lisa Souza Mahogany socks and her Bird of Paradise socks (these are on the go knitting). Her Santa Fe wrap is so close to being done, she can taste it. Jasmin decides that the Noro Kureyon Sock should be fine as a garment, but isn't so sure about how durable it will be for socks. Jasmin is looking forward to wearing it at Stitches West.

Jasmin has knit one Jacoby mitt this week. Gigi has finished the Neckdown Wrap Cardigan, and has decided to buy more of the lovely brown Venezia.

Gigi has put another repeat on the On the Vine scarf. Gigi has decided to knit in the afternoon when her biorythyms are low. Gigi is working on the Perfect Tee, and a watch cap in Cascade 220 superwash. Jasmin waxes poetic about Cascade 220.

Jasmin talks about "relative knitting" and "yarnlemia".

Mother Knows Best: (23:00)

Gigi has finished the Neckdown Wrap Cardigan, and has been hunting for the right closure. They will be digging in Jasmin's button box.

When Knitting Attacks: (28:00)

Jasmin followed Tika's and Candy's lead and decided to knit a pair of Jacoby mitts. She pulled out some Jade Sapphire 2-ply cashmere out of her stash, and cast on. Sadly, Jasmin's brain wasn't engaged, and she knit 4" of the Jacoby before she decided they were too big. While she was ripping, she discovered that the Jade Sapphire 2-ply cashmere is fragile. Jasmin has reworked the numbers and is making good progress on them now.

Gigi is frustrated. She has been working on the "Perfect Tee" (Ann Norling pattern #67) sweater. Gigi got a copy of the revised version, which was supposed to have the corrections.  Gigi has discovered that it is wrong, again. Jasmin has called Ann Norling to get corrections, left a message, and hasn't gotten a call back.

If you have bought the Perfect Tee Pattern, Jasmin recommends calling the LYS you purchased it at and request that they call Ann Norling and let her know that the pattern has some issues.

Events:

Meet and greet with the Knitmore Girls at Stitches West in the Purlescence booth from 2-4pm, Saturday, February 28, 2009.

On the Needles:

Gigi has finished the second bright blue Regia Saturn sock, she's turned the heel on her first Franklin's Panopticon sock. She is working on a vanilla red and black (Regia) sock. Gigi has also started the Scandanavian sock (out of the Little Box of Socks) in a tan/cream Regia with black Regia as the contrast color. (Tika is using the same MC Regia to make Relatively Normal socks.)

We also discuss our preemie hat knit-a-long. A pattern from Chloe Sparkle is pending.

Jasmin continues to work on her Santa Fe Wrap, which is about 3/4 done. Jasmin has finished the first Bird of Paradise (color) sock in Lisa Souza's Sock! while playing a board game with Tika, ManCandy, and Andrew.

Gigi is working on some socks out of Jasmin's Brown Eyed Girl handspun. Gigi will be doing a Lucy Neatby garter stitch short row heel on this toe-up sock. Tika suggests using a kitchen scale
to weigh yarn.

Gigi has tripped a little on her resolution to weave in her ends. Gigi has gotten a birthday gift - a cone of Artfibers Kyoto in color #20 (Gigi's perfect red). (Jasmin meant for it to me a cone of Tsuki, but got a little distracted in the process.) Gigi is looking for ideas on what to knit with her birthday Kyoto.

Jasmin is five seconds away from finishing sock #1 in the Lisa Souza Mahogany. Jasmin is almost done with the first Leyburn sock in the Lisa Souza Hardtwist (in Blackpurple).

Countingsheep on Ravelry is doing a "Wrap Alison in Comfort" blanket. If you're interested in participating, please do so before January 31st.

Jasmin got a new camera! We talk about photography and knitting. Some of our knitting photography idols include Jared Flood and Franklin Habit. Check out Flickr.com for ideas on how to punch up your knitting pictures (search "knitting" in the "search" box). You can sort by "relevant" or "interesting".

Mother Knows Best:

Gigi has been working on the Knitting Pure and Simple Neckdown Wrap Cardigan. Gigi isn't a fan of the i-cord finish, so she is going to use a silk ribbon for the closure.

We talk about planning for Stitches West, specifically making a wish list.

Start by going through your stash. Evaluate what you have, what you want, what you don't want, and the colors that your stash is flush with. (Knitter's Review had a great article about "slow stashing".) It's also a good time to organize your Ravlery queue. Last year, Jasmin's list included Colrain lace (from Webs), fiber from Lisa Souza Dyeworks, and glass needles from Michael and Sheila Ernst.

Jasmin talks about the peril of putting down yarn you might want around rabid knitters at Stitches. Jasmin recommends buying handpainted yarns in person

Events:

Meet and greet with the Knitmore Girls at Stitches West in the Purlescence booth from 2-4pm, Saturday, February 28, 2009.

Details:

The "Style a Knit to Suit you" workshop
will be hosted Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at Purlescence. The fee is $60.

Do you look through knitting magazines and wish that the finished pattern size was larger (or smaller), or that one had a different neckline, or was shorter, that you could use a different yarn? If you attend this workshop all those problems will disappear. Sharon will help you through the process of overcoming those things that have always prevented you from knitting the patterns you love. You will look at shape that suits you and come up with a standard measurement guide especially for you. You'll learn the use of gauge and stitches, shaping and necklines that will make that perfect sweater for you. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a knitting legend.
The shop will remain open until 5 pm on January 25 for meet and greet and book signing with Sharon. Call Purlescence at (408) 735-9276 to register.

On the Needles:

Gigi has finished her second pink Regia Jet socks, and is working on her second Claudia's Handpainted Argyle sock.  Gigi has tripped a little on her resolution to weave in ends immediately. Jasmin's "sock bag" includes a little vinyl zippy bag with a pair of snips, chibis, a tape measure and a few stitch markers.

Gigi continues to work on her "On the Vine" scarf by Brenda Patipa.

Jasmin is no longer hoarding her "special" yarn. Jasmin has cast on a sock in the Lisa Souza Sock! in "Bird of Paradise" (vanilla pattern).

Jasmin has an allergy to "viral knitting", but has cast on a pair of Leyburn socks in Lisa Souza Hardtwist (color "Blackpurple"). Jasmin is knitting hers top-down rather than toe-up.

Jasmin is still working on the Santa Fe Wrap, which she is enjoying thoroughly.  Jasmin also has a FO- a pair of Dashing mitts in Jade Sapphire 4-ply cashmere for a Very Sick Friend- Alison Jeppson Hyde (author of "Wrapped in Comfort"). Please think good thoughts for her recovery.

Jasmin is knitting a pair of socks in Lisa Souza's "Serrano" (color "Mahogany") in an Andrew Vanilla sock.

Jasmin needs help finding an appropriate pattern for her Mini Maiden (pictured above). Gigi would like a suggestion as to what to knit with the Red Kauni. Gigi is planning on knitting some "stashbuster socks".

Jasmin attended the Yarn Swap at Purlescence today, and brought home stuff for friends in absentia.

Mother Knows Best:

We discuss "Time Warp" knitting. Items discussed are the Juno Regina, the Einstein jacket, the dishcloth baby blanket. Jasmin talks about the Pythagorean Theorem. (You can find the Sisyphus myth here.) Jasmin talks about "time warp" spinning with spinning silk.

When Knitting Attacks:

Communication is key when subcontracting sock knitting.

We would like to thank Chloe Sparkle and Tika for appearing on the podcast this week.

Contest:

We announce the winners of our "Do Some Good" contest!

On the needles:

Gigi has finished her second red Saturn Regia sock (Jasmin helped with the blue Saturn pair). Gigi has finished the second sleeve on the neckdown wrap cardigan. She has finished the first sock (Color: Argyle Socks, Pattern: vanilla) in the Claudia's Handpaints fingering weight. JasminGigi have updated their Ravelry project pages.

Gigi finished her second Honeycomb sock, and has finished a pink Jet Regia sock, a blue Jet Regia sock, and the first blue Saturn Regia sock.

Jasmin, Tika and Chloe have been having loads of knitting adventures this week. Jasmin and Chloe found some Japanese stitch dictionaries. (Links to some of them: 1, 2, 3.) Tika and Jasmin went to Bobbin's Nest on Tuesday and did a little stash acquistion. (They both bought some HazelKnits sock yarn to try, and Tika bought some Pagewood Farms sock yarn.)

Chloe and Jasmin went hunting for dress forms at the Mervyn's closing sale- which they are using as photo props for their knitting. The whole group attended the Commuknity closing sale on Friday and Sunday.

Jasmin has worked on her Mesmer socks, her DayGlo socks, and a pair of Secret Socks. (Secret socks are being submitted to Knitty, and if they're rejected, they'll be a giveaway on the podcast.) The creative muse is contagious!

Chloe is on a blanket kick! She's knitting some really awesome blankets (including the "Super Sized Entrelac" blanket and a chevron blanket). Tika is working on a pair of Jacoby mitts out of Claudia's handpaints fingering weight (color: Pistachio).

Jasmin finished spinning the black and gold silk/merino batt from Crystal Creek Fibers for Gigi. Jasmin is casting on a pair of socks in Lisa Souza's Hardtwist Petitie (in Blackpurple).

Review:

We review four different types of interchangeable circular needles:

Addi Clicks

Denise Interchangeable Needle Set

Boye Needlemaster 200

Knitpicks Nickel and Harmony: (Here is the article from Knitter's Review.)

Mother Knows Best:

We discuss New Year's resolutions. Gigi resolves to weave in ends immediately, always have an UFO in her knitting bag, sew more, "snail" less, and learn more applications on her iPhone.

Jasmin discusses "Jasmin 2008" and delves into the basics of "Jasmin 2009". This year, Jasmin resolves to experiment more and live more in the moment. (This is the link to the awesome a capella thing, here's a link to the UC Berkeley Men's Octet videos.)

Tika has also resolved to experiment more. (Tika 2009.) Chloe has resolved to knit more out of other people's stashes. Chloe has also resolved to get out and design in public.

When Knitting Attacks:

Gigi has found that doing toe decreases while socializing is not optimal. Jasmin has a fiber related injury.
